원스_Once와 즐거운 인생, 이 시점에서 음악영화,

내가 사랑한 영화 혹은 장면 2007/10/05 22:10

숲 속의 반딧불이 반짝이면 옆 놈도 같이 따라하고 누군가 유행을 따르면 너도 나도 그 유행을 받아들인다.

자연계에서 벌어지는 이 기묘한 동조 현상에 관한 책을 읽으려다 볼륨감의 압박으로 서점에서 몇 페이지 읽다가 말았는데...
이 놈의 현상은 창작의 세계에도 기차게 들어맞는다.
누가 누구꺼 보고 한 것도 아닌데 영화계에선 비슷한 내용들의 영화가 동시다발로 만들어진다. 요즘의 경우를 보자면 30년대 경성을 배경으로 한 시대물과 지리멸렬한 중년의 일상을 음악으로 탈출하려는 아이템들이다.
거기다 공교롭게도 스토리 배경은 다르지만 지리멸렬한 인생과 음악으로의 해방이라는 동질감을 공유한 아일랜드산 저예산 영화가 난데 없이 나타나 참 재밌는 비교를 해볼 수 있는 시간이 됐다.

예술은 따지고 보면 현실 부적응자, 하고픈 말 많은 소심형 인간들의 세계와의 소통수단이다. 자신의 예술적 수단으로 비즈니스를 생각하기 전까지는 말이다.
하고 싶은 데로 살 수 없는 것 아니냐는 불행한 현실주의는 난 그래도 생존의 압박은 받지 않는다는 자긍심이 무너지는 순간...본전생각이 간절해지기 마련이다. 그리고 그가 적당한 소통수단을 가지고 있다면 어찌 그 유혹을 뿌리칠 수 있겠는가...

이 미끼를 전가의 보도로 휘두르는 게 이런 테마적 영화들의 특징이다.
그런데 두 영화 비슷하면서도 극명한 차이가 존재한다. 가족들의 생계비나 책임지는 존재 정도로 내몰린 중년 남성의 리얼리티를 설득력 있게 반영하고 있긴 하지만 '즐거운 인생'에서 벌어지는 되어지는 일들은 말 그대로 판타지다.
좀 과장 하자면 굳이 음악 안해도 대단히 불행해 보이지 않을 정도다.
하지만 그 중년 아저씨들보다 젊음에도 불구하고 훨씬 깊은 막막함에 휩쌓인 이 아일랜드 가난한 뮤지션들의 되어지는 일들은 판타지를 깨끗하게 도려내버렸다.
기본부터 막막한 인생들인데 함부로 도피하지 않으려 한다.
저예산 독립영화냐 상업영화냐의 한계성은 생각하지 말자.
어쨌든 그들은 대부분 음악으로 말하고 있다.

중요한 건 이 질문이다.
과연 음악으로의 해방은 인생의 지리멸렬에 대한 정답을 줄 수 있는가?
두 영화 모두 비슷한 방식의 대답을 영화의 마지막 장면에 놓았다.
하지만 그 뉘앙스는 너무나 다르다.
하나는 그 지리멸렬함 마저 끌어 안으려 하지만
하나는 그냥 그랬으면 싶은 판타지를 그냥 보여주기만 한다.
과연 그것이 해답을 줄 수 있는가에 대한 조금 더 깊은 성찰을 한 영화가 시도했다.
그래서 그런지 거칠고 투박했던 지난 장면들이 거대한 진심으로 다시 다가왔다.
(스포가 될테니 말하진 않겠지만)

아주 개인적으로 두 영화 모두 전개과정이 흥미롭지는 않았다. 영화 시작하자마자 끝이 보이는 그런 류 아니던가...그러나 그 음악의 진심만은 정말 멋졌다.

한 때는 즐거운 인생들이었다...

여기 그 진심이 가득한 여자주인공의 노래, 보너스다.
