헐리우드 스릴러물의 마르지 않는 샘물, 스티븐 킹의 최근 원작을 바탕으로 했다는 정보만으로 반은 먹고 들어가는 영화다.
일상에서 가볍게 스치고 지나갈만한 공포의 감성들을 지독히도 잘 잡아 내는 그의 재능이 공포스러운 미스터리일 따름이다.

귀신이 출몰하는 집들을 찾아다니며 그 허구성에 대한 책들을 쓰는 주인공.
자신 만만한 그에게 그 누구도 성공하지 못하고 귀신에 홀리고 말았다는 뉴욕의 어느 호텔 1408 호로의 초대가 던져진다.
거기다 호텔 지배인은 그의 도전정신을 슬슬 비꼬기까지 하며 주인공 뿐 아니라 관객의 조바심마저 낚아 챈다.

그러나 1408호에서 튀어나오는 귀신 중에는 사다꼬류는 없다.
'잘 모르는 것, 이해할 수 없는 것, 끝없이 안전하고 픈' 인간의 본질적 공포심을 좁디 좁은 호텔방에서 참으로 스팩타클하게 보여준다. 역시 아주 단순한 상황에서도 최대의 공포를 이끌어 내는 게 진짜 실력있는 연출임을 입증한다.

어찌나 공간감을 잘 활용하시던지...역시 원작의 힘, 스티븐 킹틱한 상상력이 빛나는 대목이라 할 수 있다.
그러고보면 성장소설로 포장되어 있지만 역시 공포감을 극복하고픈 열망에 대한 기본이 깔려있는 스탠 바이 미가 그 정서의 계보처럼 느껴진다.

가끔 혼자 집에 있을 때...느닷없이 튀어나오는 공포감이 평범하던 집 구석구석을 모두 참을 수 없는 귀신의 집으로 느끼게 한 기억이 있었다면 낯선 살인마나 정체모를 원귀가 깜짝 놀라키지 않고도 제대로 된 하우스 호러를 느끼는데 부족함이 없을 것이다.

집이 무섭다면 어디로 갈까나

겉으로는 흔한 공포물의 분위기를 자아내지만 여기서 귀신은 사후세계에 대한 믿음의 근원 문제를 뉘앙스로 깔고 있다.
주인공이 그렇게도 사후세계에 대해 냉소적인 이유는 용기나 이성 따위의 문제가 아니라 인간이 사후세계를 창조해낼 수 밖에 없었던 이유를 죽음에 대한 공포가 주는 그림자로 이해한다.
 
글쎄, 믿음으로 접근하지 않으면 종교로도 확신을 주지 못하는 그 세계를 결국 산 자의 평온함에 대한 갈구에서 찾아보려는 시도...나쁘지 않다.
