용가리가 개봉할 즈음...우리는 거대한 신드롬에 빠져있었다.
'니들이 심형래를 알아?'
이 질문에 제대로 답을 못하면 세련된 오피니언리더가 될 수 없었다.
'사람들이 보통 ...라고 알고 있잖아...근데 사실은....'이라고 시작되는 세상의 이면을 볼 줄 아는 날카로운 지성이 늘 그렇듯 사실 이면의 본질을 깊게 이해하지는 않는다. 그저 저 문장의 새로운 주어와 술어들을 찾아내면 그만일런지도 모른다.
거기다 '신지식인'이라는 시대의 아이콘까지 쓰고 있었으니...정작 용가리라는 작품에는 제대로 된 접근을 못하는 건 당연지사였으리라...마치 따봉 열풍에 뭍혀 무슨 쥬스 광고였는 지 기억 못하는 것처럼...
나름 애니메이션과 SF에 관심이 많았던 지라...나도 용가리를 꾀나 기대하고 있었지만 과열된 분위기가 오히려 불안하다는 느낌을 지울 수 없었다. 솔직히, 작가의 바탕이라는 게 있기 때문에 아무리 심형래라고 해도 공룡쭈쭈에서 당대 지구적인 테크놀로지의 집약인 쥬라기 공원으로 튄다는 건 말이 안되는 일이라고 생각했지만 그 분위기에 휩쓸렸는 지 나도 용가리가 그런 내 의심을 가볍게 밟아주리라 내심 기대하고 있었다.
박찬호 때나...박세리 때나...2002년 월드컵이나...박지성 때나...늘 그래왔던 것처럼...그들의 본질 보다는 그들의 드라마에 더 심취했던, 드라마가 끝나면 떨어지는 관심의 기억들 말이다.
내심 응원했던 용가리에 큰 실망을 하며 저만하면 의미있는 시도였다 외에 별 생각이 들지 않았던 나처럼...당시 심형래 열풍은 광속으로 사라져갔는데...
심감독님 이번엔 판을 더욱 크게 벌였다.
그렇잖아도 죽쑤고 있는 한국영화판에...
오로지 블럭버스터 하나만 독과점을 하고 있는 극장 상황에...
마치...신지식인 때와 같이 '저렇게라도 해보란 말야' 식의 시대적 코드로 갈아 타기도 했다.
거기다 간지나는 본토 침공을 하지 않았나...(본토 침공...참 많이 들어본...)
또 다시, 니들이 ...를 알아로 여기저기 뜨겁다.
영화 자체보다는 영화 모양새가 선수가 됐다.
마치 최신 IT제품이나 스포츠 기록의 스팩처럼, 화두는 300억과 1500개 600만...CG의 완성도 등에만 쏠려있다.
당연히 초유의 사건이니 그런 숫자들이 나름 의미를 가지긴 한다.
뭐 그냥 노파심인 건....행여나 그런 기대들과 숫자들이 흥행여부와 관계없이...
밀물처럼 디워와 심형래를, 한국영화 수익구조를, 제작환경을, 근냥 할퀴고만 지나가버리고 끝나지 않을까 하는 것이다.
